Mary Musholt was nominated for the PNP of the Year award based on her dedication to child advocacy, WAPNAP and to the advancement of the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner profession. She is deserving of this honor based on her distinguished and varied career and her continued efforts to advocate for child health in the State of Wisconsin.

Ms. Musholt has been contributing to the Nursing profession since obtaining her BS from UW- Milwaukee in 1973. This was followed by an MS in Community Health Nursing from UW-Milwaukee in 1976, and certification as a PNP in 1999 after completion of the PNP sequence of courses at UW-Madison. She has worked as a staff nurse, supervisor and charge nurse, instructor, project specialist at a school of nursing, and independent nurse consultant. She worked for 3 years as a CNS for the UW Medical School Genetics section with a focus on an American Indian population, and for 7 years as a CNS with the Waisman Center, with both positions dedicated to promoting the health of individuals with Developmental Disabilities or other special health care needs. Ms. Musholt’s passion for public health was honed during her 2 years as a Madison PHN and her 4 years as a consultant for the State of Wisconsin Division of Public Health. She has coordinated the Dane County Neighborhood Child Health Clinics as well as being contracted by the Dane County Parent Council, Inc. to provide PNP services to 1000 children ages 0-5 in the Head Start, Early Head Start, and child care program. She continues with the Dane County Parent Council and has established a well-respected program of care for these children, their families, and staff members through continuing education, consultation, and innovative use of available resources.

Shortly after graduation from UW-Madison, Ms. Musholt was elected President Elect of WAPNAP and spent 3 years on the Board in this leadership commitment, and she has also served in a liaison position to the Maternal Child Health Coalition for 6 years. She is an accomplished lecturer at the State and National level and provides University lectures upon request. She has numerous publications ranging from developmental disabilities issues to lead poisoning in children. She has received a grant from NAPNAP in 2000 for smoking prevention and cessation and another from Aventis in 2004 for asthma education. To round out Ms. Musholt’s community involvement, she has volunteered as a UW Arboretum steward from 1994-1998, a facilitator for the Head Start Community Evenings for Families, an SISB camp nurse for the Family support and Resource Center, and a coordinator of the Luke House Community Meal program for one meal per month since 1995.

WAPNAP salutes Mary Musholt!
