Katie Nekola, a resource
coordinator at O'Keeffe Middle School,
has recently secured a $10,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife
Service to conduct educational activities and wetland and river's edge restoration
along the Yahara River Parkway. Starting this August, this exciting project
will get O'Keeffe seventh graders involved in environmental stewardship and
increase their knowledge and appreciation of the river.
It will be a partnership
between the school, the Friends of the Yahara River Parkway, Urban Open Spaces,
and the Aldo Leopold Center. The state DNR and City Parks department have also
pledged their support.
