National Telemedia Council

National Telemedia Council

A professional, non-profit organization promoting media literacy education through partnerships with educators, informed citizens, and media producers across the country.

Media Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create information in a variety of print and non-print media formats.

Media Literacy is an expanded view of traditional literacy essential to survival in a media-filled world. It is mindful viewing and reflective judgement.

NTC is the oldest professional media literacy organization in the US, having been founded in 1953. From the beginning we have taken a positive, non-judgemental attitude and embraced a philosophy that values reflective education and cooperation rather than confrontation with the media industry.

Our Board of Directors includes nationally and internationally recognized professionals in the field of media education: university and college professors, classroom teachers, library media specialists, local and state education administrators, and informed citizens. NTC publishes Telemedium: The Journal of Media Literacy. NTC sponsors workshops and conferences and maintains the Media Literacy Clearinghouse and Center. Please contact the office for membership information.
