Suggestions for 2 / 3
Beginning Activities

Concepts to be presented/reinforced:
  • Row, column, cell address

    Activity idea #1 - off the computer
  • Give students a print copy of an empty 5X5 spreadsheet (How to make a blank 5X5 grid...).
    Have them practice their listening skills and review cell addresses.
    Sample directions:
      Put a star in cell A3.
      Put a circle in cell B4.
      Color cell C7 green.
      Etc.

  • Use the 5X5 grid to practice listening and mental math skills. Have students follow directions:
      Put the number that comes before 5 in cell A1.
      Put the number that comes after 11 in cell B3.
      Put 2 more than 4 in cell E2.
      Etc.

    Concepts to be presented/reinforced:
  • Row, column, cell address

    Activity idea #2 - on the computer.
  • Open a Kid Pix template which has a 5X5 spreadsheet grid on it (How to make a 5X5 template in Kid Pix...).
    Students follow directions using stamps:
      Stamp the sun in cell D2.
      Stamp a house in cell C4.
      Stamp a bird in cell B2.
      Etc.

    Variation on a theme:
  • Have students use the template to make designs and directions for other students to follow.

    Concepts presented/demonstrated:
  • Create a spreadsheet
  • Enter data
  • Create a graph

    Activity idea #3 - Computer demonstration activity:
  • Collect numerical data from students (siblings, number of pets, age, etc.)
  • Enter the category names in row 1, starting with cell B1.
  • Enter student name and data, starting in row 2.
    (You may also want to make a row for category totals.)
  • Show how to use the spreadsheet to make a graph.

    Materials Needed:
  • Computer with spreadsheet program
  • Large monitor or television attached.
