In this Carmie Thompson photograph the La Follette High School Band pauses to perform for the 1977 Holiday Parade crowd at the corner of Carroll and Main streets. In the distance are Grace Episcopal Church and the Gay Building. SHSW Press Connection Collection
Going to a parade downtown is the essence of tradition--families coming downtown with their children, parents recalling the days when their parents brought them...For many, such a visit was the visit to the city, a day with grandma, a special event. [The parade held on Mineral Point Road because of construction on the Square] does not lend itself to the intimacy the Square had for the Holiday Parade. What a missed opportunity for the city.
