The Fred M. Brown family of 121 E. Gilman Street was so conscious of the importance of the Governors Mansion located across the street that many family pictures such as this one taken about 1895 include the Governors Mansion, not their own home, as a backdrop. The Gilman Street house originally built in 1855 served as home for eighteen Wisconsin governors from 1884 until 1949 when the state purchased the current official residence in Maple Bluff.
