Reading Diariesby Margaret, Lincoln ElementaryIntroductionI got my question from when I visited Anne Frank's house in the summer of 1996. I really wanted to do this project because I like to read diaries and see what different lives are about. I think I really like this project because I saw where Anne Frank's diary took place. I thought I would learn about different feelings from each diary. ProcedureTo answer "How are these girl's diaries different and the same?" I read Anne Frank's Diary, Zalta's Diary, The Long Journey and The Winter of Red Snow. Anne Frank's Dairy was about a girl who had to hide from the Nazis because she was Jewish. She had to live her life behind a bookcase but there were many rooms. Zalta's Diary was about a girl that lived during a war. The war was so bad she didn't even have school. The Long Journey was about a girl who was a Pilgrim and had to wear three petticoats. She had a hard winter. The Winter of Red Snow was about a girl who lived during the Revolutionary War. She got to meet George Washington. How I got these books is my librarian helped me find the books. After I read the books I reviewed the books. The materials I used were books, graph paper and a notebook to get information and write it down. I thought I could read better in the classroom rather than my house. ResultsAfter I read the diaries, I graphed all the books down by how much action and details the characters expressed. I took graph paper and rated each book by ones, twos and threes. One meant it had little action and detail, two meant it had just plain detail and action and three meant it had lots of action and detail. See graphThe Winter of Red Snow had the most story and details (expressed by the characters) and thoughts put into the diary. Anne Frank's Diary, Zalta's Diary and The Long Journey I did not like a lot because they did not have a good story and details. I did not think that would happen. If I did this project again I would read more diaries and write down more data. I would also like to ask more people about the diaries they read and if they liked them. Interpreting ResultsI learned that I could see what other girls lives are about. I think I learned that you can do any kind of inquiry project and read any kind of book. AcknowledgmentsI would like to thank my mom and for helping me think of this project and think of the things I needed for this project. I also would like to thank Ms. Schultz for helping me find diaries to read and Mr. Jeff for helping me write this article
