Three Dogs
by JoJo
Lapham Elementary

Introduction

My Great Blue question was about how dogs help people. After reading some books about the ways that dogs help people, I decided to write a story about some of my friends. Here is my story:

One day Ali, Priya and Benji were playing hide and seek. Ali said, "I hope when I get a job I'm working with dogs."

Eleven years later the three kids were playing hide and seek in Chicago at a park. Their dogs were playing hide and seek too. After playing hide and seek three times the dogs decided to take a rest. The three friends started telling stories about their dogs.

Ali started to tell a story about Muir the bloodhound. "Muir always sniffs the ground. He is a hunting dog. One day I lost my cat named Kitty and my dog found her by sniffing around our neighborhood."

"My dog Doctor is also good at finding people. Saint Bernards are so gentle and bearlike, they love the snow," Priya said. "My dog found Scott when he had fallen asleep after being buried in the snow during an avalanche."

"The dogs that I train don't rescue people but they help people that are blind," Benji said.

"How do they help people?" Ali asked.

"Seeing eye dogs helped people that are blind get around. Dogs go wherever people need to go like the store, the mall and in restaurants. The dog I brought with me today is named Birdie. He is a German Shepard, and I think he's ready to play a game of tag."

"Muir the bloodhound is it!" Ali shouted.

Muir tagged Ali with his paw and then Ali was it. The friends played in the park until the people were tired. Then they all went home and took a nap.

How to Make a Bear
by Chantal
John Muir School

Introduction

My project was to design and sew my own stuffed bear. I got the idea when I watched my grandma make a blanket for my cousin. I like to sew too and wanted to try to make something myself.

Procedure

I talked to my teacher, Mrs. Bostrom, about designing a bear. She told me yes, I could do that. I started by making a picture of what I wanted my bear to look like. Then I talked to Mrs. Bostrom about what kind of fabric I could use, how much I would need and how I could sew it. I needed to count by two's for each arm, leg, the head and the body to get measurements for how much fabric and stuffing I needed. Mrs. Bostrom got the fabric and stuffing and I brought the needle and thread. She helped me cut out two bodies, heads, arms and legs. I sewed all the parts together with the needle and thread. After I was done with the sewing I stuffed the bear and Mrs. Bostrom helped me sew it together. I added button eyes and nose and a pipe cleaner mouth. I also used pipe cleaners for decoration. I put pipe cleaners on each ear for earrings and made a pipe cleaner bow on top of the head. I sewed some red fuzzy fabric to the body for a stomach.

Acknowledgements

I would like to thank Mrs. Bostrom for helping with the bear. She helped me sew some of the pieces together. I also want to thank my grandma for the needle and thread.

How Did You Say You Make A Floor Plan?
by Michael
Randall School

Introduction

What is the best way to make a floor plan? I got this question in a number of ways. First, I'm working on a project with an architect on Tuesday afternoons and we're doing a lot with floor plans. Second, I've always been a little bit interested in making drawings like floor plans. It's important because I think it could get me a lot better at drawing. In this article there will be a floor plan to show how one of mine looks along with a description of how I drew it. There are eight steps to making a floor plan. I will also show one more drawing of what it would look like if I did the final step first.

My hypothesis was that the order in which things were drawn would be like this: First the basic square or rectangle, then the porch or other additions, then the arrows and dimensions, then the rooms, then the electrical wiring, and last the furniture.

Procedure

To answer my question, I made a whole lot of drawings. Some of them were real houses and some of them I made up. I made enough so that I could try out different orders for the steps. I tried using graph paper for a few drawings and that didn't work out at all. The real houses I did were: my neighbor Mark's house, my garage, and another neighbor's house. I also had advice from Tom (the architect) about the houses.

What Did I Find Out?

There were 6 different houses I made: 3 of them were real, 3 of them were made up. The houses had anywhere from 1 to 4 drawings, each drawing representing a floor. The first house I did was really a joke. It was really screwed up. The lines weren't straight and I couldn't think of anything to put on the second floor (besides the bedrooms) so I put in 'open space!' The next house I did was my neighbor Mark's house. I didn't know what much of it was like so all I could do were the outside dimensions. I still don't know if the dimensions were right for the back porch, because it looked a little small, maybe a lot too small.

Then I made the worst one of all. The problem was there was no basement! The electrical, H.V.A.C. (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) and gas fixtures were in the garage. That house was also lopsided. The next building I did was our garage. You can imagine what that looked like. It was one small room. The next one was another neighbor's house. That house had a study sticking out of it, and it looked a little big to me. The rooms weren't drawn exactly to scale because I didn't know how big they were. Then I made one more drawing that only had one problem which I caught while making it. I had made the same mistake on all my drawings. The electrical wiring was all connected so if you turned on one light they all went on.

Here's a drawing of everything I learned put together.

I drew things in this order. The first thing I put on the page was the basic square or rectangle. Then I drew in all the rooms without labeling them. Then I added on the porch, deck or any part like that. Then I put on the arrows and the dimensions. Then I labeled the rooms and put all the furniture in them, and last I put in the electrical wiring.

Here's what a drawing would look like if I started with the last thing first and went backwards.

New Directions

If I were to do this again I would make more drawings and more real houses.

Desert Architecture 20,000 A.D.
by Brooke
John Muir School

Introduction

One of my ideas is about what the future will look like in the desert. I'm interested because I want to be an architect, and I'm curious why people think that the future will have flying cars and wavy buildings.

Procedure

I looked in a book called Future, and I looked at architect books. I did sketches. I had a few discussions with my mom and Mr. Wiesner. I also made a model out of a kind of paper.

Results

One of my ideas is that people should live where they work. It would be called a multi building. They would have the work in the front, the shops on the right and the homes on the left. It would save gas. People could live in private houses too, except the houses' yards overlap. That way they would save space.

Inside, they have furniture that you lay back in. You also have a bed that feels like you will fall off.

Hammerheads
by Malcolm
Lapham Elementary

Introduction

My cousin Odessa gave me the idea of learning more about hammerhead sharks. After reading some books about hammerheads, I decided to write a story, and here it is:

Nice Hammerhead went straight one morning to catch his prey of sting rays. He saw a fin. He thought it was one of the great white sharks. He swam up closer and closer. He said, "That's not a great white shark, that's my brother Bullwinkle."

Then they saw two sting rays. They went to go eat them. Nice Hammer and Bullwinkle catchthe rays with their hammerheads. They go down and hold them down with their hammer and then eat them.

Four great white sharks swim up real fast because they smelled the blood. The hammerheads can feel the great whites with the electric sensors in their hammer. The great whites attack the hammerheads. The hammerheads fight back but their mouths are too little. The hammerheads wiggle out and swim to a safe place.

The hammerheads saw a big red cross. It was a shark hospital. Nice Hammer asked the nurse, "Can we have big mouths?"

The nurse said, "Of course, follow me." They followed her to the nurse office. She gave them something that you put in mouths. Then she grabbed both of their mouths and made them bigger.

The hammerheads swam out to battle the great whites. The great whites died.

The end.

The Remoter
Elliott Gilbertson-Brown & Lyman
Van Hise Elementary School

I would like to tell you about an invention that my friend Lyman and I made up. It is made up of five pieces of wood and a remote control car. We will nail the boards together to make a box with no top. We will use super glue to attach it to the roof of the remote control car.

You can use this to carry stuff from one place to another. For instance, you could bring a bowl of popcorn from the kitchen to the living room! Then I will gobble it up! My friends and I can give each other my Game Boy without getting up! We can also give each other the Playstation Controls and the remote control for the TV! If you have a pet you could bring your pet its food or toys or give your pet a ride!

An Invention-The Duck Holder
by Jennifer Zirk and Eleanor Morgan
Van Hise Elementary School

We first looked through a basket of things people did not want. We found all sorts of things like: a tissue box, toilet roll tubes, a bottle, bottle caps and a piece of metal. We stuck the bottle to the tissue box and bottle caps for eyes and toilet roll tubes for legs.

What it does is: It takes food and serves the food through its beak. Wow!

The Lost Cubs
by Priya
Lapham Elementary

Introduction

I thought about my Great Blue topic and the first thing that came to me was lions so I decided to learn about them. I read some real stories about lions and also some fictional stories. Then I decided to write my own story.

Results

Once there was a family of lions, called a pride, in Green Forest, Africa. This family was about to have new lion cubs. After three and a half months the mother lion was ready to give birth. She searched for a protected spot, called a den, near the pride's home territory. Two lion cubs were born with their eyes closed. One day the lion cubs were playing together in the forest. As their game continued the lion cubs began to wander farther and farther from the pride. Suddenly three hunters came and took one of the lion cubs to a nearby zoo. The mother lion began calling her cubs with a soft roar. The father lion began calling loudly for help from other lions that live outside of their territory. Only one of their cubs, the one that is called Lorna, answered the call of her mother.

The lion cub in the zoo was named Morgen. Morgen played with the zoo owners who gave him toys and Lorna played climbing on her dad and mom's back. The zoo keepers gave Morgen dead meat to eat everyday. Lorna ate the meat her mom and dad hunted, mostly giraffe, zebra and deer. The lions sometimes ate the sick animals that share their African home and help to stop the sickness from spreading out to other animals so they don't get sick. When the lions killed a big deer all the lions in their pride shared it, but the way they shared it was not very polite. The male lions ate first, then the lionesses, then the cubs. The cubs in waiting almost starved and died because the lioness ate until she was full. When there was lots of food for the pride, the lion didn't need to hunt much that day. The pride could eat off their kill for more than one day sometimes.

One evening Lorna went searching for Morgen because she remembered him. When she got to the zoo, she saw Morgen in a cage. She bit off some of the cages bars and Morgen was able to escape. They both ran back to the forest but the couldn't find the lion and lioness. Soon they came to a quiet pretty place in the forest, filled with lots of flowers. There they found a pride of lions that they could live together with.

Drawing Plants
by Wah
Randall School

Introduction

My question for Great Blue is a Gallery project. My project is about drawing plants in the Pond Life book in my class. It is easy to draw because it has color. That is important because it makes me a better drawer at plants and it makes me put more detail into my drawings. I am good at drawing things, but I was not good at drawing plants. Now I am good!

Procedure

I drew plants from Pond Life on paper. I looked in the book and at real plants and I can remember drawing cattails, lily pads and a lot more things in the Pond Life book.

Skills and Progress

My cattail drawing has big long leaves and on some of them it has some sort of black seeds. It has four long leaves. In real life it will be like three and a half feet long. The black seeds are by the top but you will see some of the leaves on top.

It is about four inches of the black seeds. There is a kind of sharp thing on every top of the cattails, and it comes out of the mud that is kind of wet so cattails can grow from the water or the pond. I like it because it is about my height and it stays up a long time. They are in groups.

The lily pads have roses on them, and some don't. There are a lot of kinds of lily pads, but I only know one kind. It is called a white water lily. It has some stripes on it and it has some sort of stem that comes out of the rock that is in the water or the lakes or the pond. I think that white water lilies are the prettiest kind of lily pads because the white rose matches the green leaves and the stem. The stem is long and skinny so it will be longer than wide. The stem is about 4 to 6 feet long and I like the rose because it is pretty and has about 50 petals.

I got better at drawing plants, I also got better at noticing the details on the plants, and drawing them in my picture.

New Directions

Next time I'd try to use different materials such as markers, water colors, and regular paint.

Acknowledgements

I would like to thank Mr. Wagler, Mr. Wong, and Mr. Riley for helping me improve, and making me a better artist.

Drawing Techniques
by Luticia
Randall Elementary

Introduction

What techniques will help me draw my family culture? I got this question because I love drawing and I wanted to draw real people and what they're doing. My question is important to me because drawing is fun and this is a good question because I'm having fun collecting data. I thought I would find techniques on only the hard parts of drawing, but instead I found them for both the hard and easy parts.

Procedure

I read some books, and asked kids for some drawing techniques. I also drew my family doing something. The materials I used were interviewing and two books. One is called Drawing and Drawing People, by Elliot Ivebaum. I drew a lot of different stuff for practice like hands, noses, eyes, etc., but I didn't draw birds, bunnies, and other animals. Some problems were drawing family culture, because I had to do homework at school and do drawings as homework.

Techniques and Advice

I talked to a few kids. Their techniques were: Look at the shape of the head. Shade. Try to make the nose realistic. Concentrate. Use a sharp pencil. Don't draw fast. Pay attention to your vision, to what you see. Draw the head first. Draw over and over until you get your drawing the way you want it. Draw socks on the people. Draw hands on people. Hide eyes in hair. Hide hands behind the back. Put hair in a ponytail if it's a girl. Keep eyes in center of head.

Let your feelings show in the art work. Put your name on the art work and on the bottom of the page write your name and the date. Draw wrinkles. Look at shape of the face. Make hair individual strands. Draw over lines to make the drawing darker. Take up as much time as you need. Only make half a head like a U, then add a dot for nose.

I say, "I'm proud of what I do". Draw what you think you need work on over and over. If you mess up, use your imagination and add stuff. Plan what you want to draw before you draw it. Don't make normal stuff, make something new. Make cartoons and famous people. You can make some drawings from your religion. You should divide the head into three slices from top to brow, from brow to nose, and nose to chin. Draw long wavy hair.

All the girls drew girls and the boys drew boys. Some kids make shoelaces. All first either have a miniskirt, dress, short pants, or jeans. Some girls that people drew had high heels or some big bottoms so they are taller. Some shoes were just round circles or ovals with designs so they look like a special brand of shoes. The boys dressed in sweatshirts, or T-shirts, and pants.

I learned these techniques and advice from the book: Let the lines flow into each other. Do darker areas for heavier parts of the bodies. For curves press harder, and for straight lines put less pressure on them. Your hand should feel relaxed and in control. Try not to let your hand tighten up. Draw what's closer bigger.

Think of how the person you're drawing feels and how you feel. Pay attention to what you're drawing. Relax. Don't worry how good your drawing is. Don't try to create a masterpiece right away. Make sure when you make two people they are interacting with each other. Keep your hand loose and last longer. Start out with light lines, then make them darker if that's what you want.

Take notes. When you have one second to draw something, draw the outline then add detail. Use different types of lines. Try to capture the spirit of the pose (if somebody poses for you). Work slowly. Try to feel what's happening in pencil line. Don't forget your pencil.

Here's some advice from me: Have confidence in yourself. Put in a little detail. Keep your drawing simple. If the drawing isn't perfect or needs more detail, put it in later on. Don't forget you don't have to draw everything. For example: you can hide arms behind backs. Most important stuff is to pay attention, relax, don't let your hand get stiff, and don't expect a masterpiece right away.

New Directions

Next time I could talk to a good artist and more kids.

I would like to thank Mr. Wagler who helped me. I would also like to thank my parents and friends for encouraging me.

Designing Web Sites
by Justin
Randall School

Introduction

"How do you make a web site?" I got this question when I was thinking about doing an apprenticeship about computers, so I decided to do a Great Blue project on web sites. This is the second web site I have worked on.

Web sites have lots of possible uses. Most web sites are for advertisements and businesses. The ones with games are still mostly owned by companies. I think a cool branch of web sites is ones made with vrml code instead of html code. (Vrml code allows there to be virtual worlds on the Internet that you can move around in and interact with.) But in my project there is only html code involved, mainly because that is all that I was able to learn in a short time.

Procedure

The first thing that I did was to find a computer with a web site building program on it. The one I used was Netscape Navigator. In Netscape the first thing you have to do is open a new page. It is already html so you don't have to put any tags in. Then I decided what the web site should have on it. I needed to get the materials that you need to put on the site, like pictures, text, and the programming for games, if you want to put them on.

If the page is too long to fit on a computer screen, then you should make links at the top that go to the bottom or middle. To do this, you need to anchor the place that you want to go to and then put a link to it at the top to go to it, and you can do it the same way if you're going from the bottom to the top. To make a link you type the name of the link, select, then write where you want it to go. If you want it to go to an anchor, select the anchor instead of writing the link to a place. To have another section of the web page you make a different page and put a link to it.

I have some fancy handwriting on my web site because I bought some extra fonts. To put in pictures you go to edit, then click on insert, and browse until you find the picture you want to put in.

To put text in the page you put the window out of the way, open the text, copy all the text, and paste it in the place you want.

I wanted to put games on my web page, but I did not have enough time to learn Java, which is what you need to make games run from a web page.

My Pages

My web site has three pages: home page, main page, and fun page. The home page has a picture of Randall and Franklin Schools, a link to the main page, a link to the fun page, a link to my class's web page, and a link to the Great Blue Heron web page.

The main page has five essays that I wrote earlier this year at school. These are "My Class's Living Machine," "My Place in Nature," "My Autobiography," "My Reading Essay," and "My Family's Traditional Foods." It also has links to the home page and to the fun page. Because this page is very long, I also put a link from the top going to the start of each of the essays, and at the bottom of each of the essays there's a link to the top of the page.

The fun page has some mind twisters, jokes, a link to the home page, and link to the main page. I was going to put some games on the page but my dad said that I needed to learn Java to put on games. Java takes a long time to learn, so I passed. The fun stuff section of the page has one trivia question and two jokes. The trivia was from something else, and one of the jokes was from someone else, but the one with Bill and Bob I made up myself.

Skills

The best way to make your web design skills better is to practice. By working on this project I got a bit better at typing and better at designing web pages. Something else is that I found out what I can and cannot do on building a web site. I've learned that when you put in an anchor, the top line is the line below the anchor. I learned that to put a program on the web page you need to know Java.

New Directions

Next time if I work on the same project I would put more jokes and trivia on it. I would do a connected project on Java, which is what you need to know to put in programs.

Feedback

I don't have an address yet for my web page, but you probably can find it in the Heron Network site connected to Room 202 at Randall School. Please email me at jbalantekin@madison.k12.wi.us with your feedback.

My dad helped me a lot building the web site and in finding good pictures for my web site.

Kittens
by Airelle
Lapham School

I spend most of my weekends at my grandma's house. We have had several cats with litters of kittens. When kittens are first born, their mom cleans them off by licking all over them. Kittens cannot see or hear anything for at least one week. House kittens and wild kittens are very different from each other. House kittens like lots of love and are very playful.

My grandma and I found a wild kitten in the middle of winter. It took us a couple of weeks to catch the kitten. We just kept putting little bowls of kitten food on the back porch. Finally, one Sunday afternoon my grandma caught the kitten. We brought the kitten inside and put her in a cat cage. We kept talking to her outside of her cage and held on to her for long periods of time. The wild kitten finally warmed up to my grandma and I. But she still did not go by other people. My grandma and I thought the wild kitten would be happier on the farm where she could enjoy other animals and be outside whenever she wanted.

One Rainy Day
by Benjamin
Lapham School

Introduction

I wanted to learn all about weasels.

Procedure

I went to the library and got a lot of books about weasels. Beth and Jean got me more. I read about real weasels and weasels in fiction books. Then I wrote a story with what I learned.

Results

My story is called "One Rainy Day". My brothers and I are weasels. We are covered in brown and white fur. We are 12-18 inches long and our tails are 2 inches long. We weigh about l2 pounds. But I weigh less because I am younger. Luckily, we are not an endangered species. We are related to minks, polecats, martens, and wolverines. We are shy, but very fast animals. An interesting fact about us is that our fur changes to white during the winter.

One rainy Sunday Eli, David and I were out in the woods. We got hungry and we got some food. Weasels like to eat mice and squirrels. We live in places like rock piles, holes, forests, farms, mountains, and dens. After we ate, we went back to our dens.

The next morning I played with my brothers outside. We played volleyball and it was a tie. Then I started to dig. But weasels are not very good diggers. Dogs are better diggers then weasels. I found an eye patch and a wooden leg. I turned into a pirate weasel.

And then I noticed it was getting colder. I went back to my den and cooked dinner and ate it. Then I went to bed.

The next morning I ate breakfast and explored in the wood and I saw a hole. I went down and down and down and down and down and when I got to the bottom I decided to make a clubhouse. I told my brothers about the secret place and they wanted to see it for themselves. When they got to the bottom they said, "Hmmmm, we need more space! We need to dig more space!

So they decided to dig so far that they ended up in Alabama. We said, "That's better!" We sat on a couch that was made out of leaves and they said, "What we need is a real TV."

I stood up and ran back to my den to get my old TV. When I brought it back I sat down on the couch and said,"I forgot to tell you that this is a snake hole!"

David said, "Let's watch channel 38, I think there is a special on about cooking with mice!"

Eli said, "Then let's watch it, I want to learn how to make Mouse Soup."

Suddenly the couch began to move. We got up and saw that we had been sitting on a snake! The snake began to chase us so we ran back through the tunnel and as soon as we saw an opening we started to run above ground. We ran until we got to the pond and then we jumped on a log. The snake slithered into the pond and we started floating to the other side of the pond. When we got to the other side, we jumped off the log onto the bank. "Well that was a close one!" I said.

My brothers agreed, "You're right about that!"

"Let's go back to my den and watch TV!" I suggested. When we got back to my home we realized that I left my TV in the snake hole! My brother Eli suggested that we read a book. I suggested that we write a book about our adventure, "Let's call it One Rainy Day!"

New Directions

I would like to see some real live weasels.

Acknowledgements

I would like to thank the people that helped me research facts about weasels, study weasels in fiction, and write my very own story. They are: Beth, Mr. Swift, Jean Dunn, Virginia and my mom and dad, Lynette and Dan.

Animals of the Amazon Rain Forest
by Kylen
Lapham School

Introduction

I chose this project because I was very interested in the rainforest.

Procedure

First I thought of some questions about certain animals that I wanted to find answers to. I looked in books, I watched a video and I talked to biologists that knew a lot about the rainforest.

Results

I put the facts I learned about the rainforest into a story. Then I made a quilt about the story. My story is: Animals of the Amazon Rainforest.

I always wanted to go to the Amazon rainforest. One day I was hired for a very important expedition there. As I was walking in the Amazon rainforest I looked up in the canopy. I saw a harpy eagle. A harpy eagle is very special to see. The harpy eagle caught a howler monkey and carried it away with its powerful wings. When a harpy eagle sees a circle of birds, it knows there is prey under the circle of birds.

Then I saw a jaguar. It was looking for its dinner. Then the jaguar took off after an anteater. But the anteater took off first and hid in some bushes and got away. I wanted a closer look at the jaguar so I followed along behind it. Then I discovered that jaguars can swim, when I saw it chasing and catching a turtle in the river. I suddenly realized I was lost in the Amazon rain forest. It was getting late, so I set up my tent and found some wood for my campfire. Then I cooked and ate my dinner and put out the campfire and went to bed. I had never slept in the rainforest before and I was surprised that it was really loud. I heard a lot of frogs, bats whizzing through the air and some squirrel monkeys screeching and swinging and jumping and putting on a trapeze act. I even heard a big cat go by and I thought it was a jaguar.

In the morning I think I saw some of the things that I heard the night before. I was noticing that it is very moist in the rainforest when suddenly I looked down and saw a poison arrow frog. It was black and blue. I saw a big green snake that looked like it wanted to eat the poison arrow frog, but it knew that its bright colors meant it was poisonous, so the snake slithered away.

I heard a loud "ca ca". It was a toucan. Toucans have hollow bills because hollow bills are lighter than if they weren't hollow. Then I turned my head and saw a three-toed sloth. Both kinds of sloths, three-toed sloths and two-toed sloths are so slow that a person in one minute can go as far as a sloth can go in one hour. Sloth's fur is really grey but it looks green because green algae grows on it and helps camouflage it in the green leaves. Both kinds of sloths live in the canopy. There are two kinds of canopies, the emergent trees and the canopy. There are more animals that live in the canopy because there are a lot of fruits, nuts and leaves, and there are not as many predators there.

I heard a loud bird call and it was a macaw. I thought that maybe I could follow the macaw out of the forest. So when the macaw perched on a branch, I talked to it and said, "Could you show me how to get out of the rainforest?" And it said, "Sure! Just follow me." I took down my tent and put it in my backpack and we started on our journey out of the forest. Along the way I saw a lot of new plants and animals. I took specimens of plants and insects and took pictures.

We finally found our way out of the rainforest. I was kind of sad to leave so I said, "Goodbye," to the macaw and thanked it for helping me out of the forest. Then I went to the airport so that I could go home to Madison, Wisconsin and write about my expedition in this story.

New Directions

I would like to learn more things about the rainforest and make more quilts and write more stories.

Acknowledgments

I would like to thank Mr. Swift, Beth Ferris, my mom,Kelly Kearns, and my dad,Tom McClintock. I want to thank Nancy Davis for helping me with the quilt, and biologists Bob Hay and Eric Epstein for giving me facts.
