After a Sexual Assault - a handbook-

Rape Crisis Center, Inc.,
Dane County, Wisconsin.
September, 1997

Introduction

This booklet was written to provide information about the process of reporting and prosecuting a sexual assault as it concerns the victim. While the large majority of victims are female, males are also victims of sexual assault. Throughout this booklet, victims are referred to as "she," but the booklet's information pertains to male victims also. The decision to report a sexual assault involves the victim in a complex legal system. Understanding how the system works and what options are available may help to make the decision easier.

If you or someone you know has been assaulted, you will find useful information concerning the legal system, and medical and emotional follow-up care. You don't need to go through any of these procedures alone. At your request, a friend, relative, or advocate/counselor from the Rape Crisis Center can accompany you.

If at any point you don't understand what's happening or why -- ask. The detective, district attorney, or victim/witness specialist assigned to your case and the Rape Crisis Center advocate are all available to explain things to you, and are concerned with your well-being.
