Links to Retailers' Pages

Bike shops, mail-order outfits, and so forth, but not sellers of services. Many of them are great resources for their respective areas.

Local bike shops in our area have their own page.

Wish to see the WWW page describing your business listed (or unlisted) here? Just drop a note to the editor at BCP@danenet.org, or-- better-- use this form. Understand that the Bicycling Community Page is strictly non-commercial, which means on the upside that listings are absolutely free, but on the downside that the editors write the copy that describes the link.

Aardvark Cycles
A business name to get to the head of any list! They say "Aardvark Cycles exists to provide the best mountain bike accessories and components in an ever-changing on-line format. We offer high end and hard-to-find components at the best prices around." True? Low-end roadies like me can't judge-- can a mere saddle ever be worth $110-- but they do have a nice-looking site, and plenty of stuff for sale.
Online mostly, with an outlet store in Provo, Utah.

Bicycle Transit Authority
This site has a couple of commercial sections-- bike books, videos, and jewelry, with an apparel section coming-- and a whole bunch of other sections without any clear commercial agenda. The bookstore listed almost two dozen titles for the Midwest, most of which I hadn't heard of. One interesting feature is the ability to specify a variety of parameters with respect to how you plan to use a bicycle, and how much you want to pay, and get recommendations about what to buy. Another section lets you do head-to-head comparisons of various specific models, based upon a big database of technical information on the bikes. All this is based upon very extensive CGI programming as well as deep information on the bikes. They don't sell bikes-- but they do have a database of places that do, searchable by zip code. My searches returned dead-on accurate information on the shops in the areas, without omissions or errors. There is, of course, a links list section, and a repair and maintenance section, and a well-written advocacy column, updated monthly. The "pro shop" sections are devoted to high-end mountain and road accessories, Impressively broad, deep, and also good-looking. Enough so that Yahoo made them a daily pick

Bikeman [The Fridge]
This page for Bikeman/Bath Cycle and Ski, located in Woolwich, ME, has wonderful cartoony graphics and a great attitude. Probably the funnest part is "the 'fridge"-- "it's not what's in it, it's what's on it." What's on it is "all the info we have on cycling in Maine." Of which there is quite a bit-- ride schedules, race schedules, "the reading room"-- where they say "welcome to the bathroom... the only room in the house dedicated to reading." What was there when I checked was a hilarious and insightful article called Last Place Pro, a reminiscence on the 1996 Mt. Snow World Cup.

Bike World
A shop in San Antonio that does a brisk local business in such items as Trek and Klein bikes, and both local and mail-order of such other items as Spinergy wheels. An excellent, very professional look to the page, and-- to their credit-- they also provide some decent copy on their page that will be of use to the local bike folk-- something not true of plenty of retails sites.
The Bikestore
"We're an organized cooperative of local independent bicycle dealers." Madison's Williamson Bicycle Works is one of them. Bio-Wheels
This is a racing-oriented shop in Cincinnati, apparently with a sister store in Asheville NC. A rare site, that isn't trying to sell anything on the internet- they focus on the LBS concept, going so far as to post a little manifesto on the topic. They even admit in print that they support Planned Parenthood, something that a wimpier outfit in a place like Cincinnati (home of such progressive approaches to freedom of speech as the well-publicized felony prosecutions of their own museum directors) might choose not to reveal. This site has a unique design- with gigantic background images that load quickly, presumably because they consist of large fields of solid colors that compress nicely. For content, there are actually poems, excellent technical articles, and features. Excellent!

DownTube
The business side of this site seems to be "cheap bike parts." They offer a sort of shopping cart, but go on to recommend against using it yet. Other parts of the site are a variety of CGI-based applications, such as a stolen bike database and, perhaps most interestingly, a registry of bike parts that one is willing to let go for the cost of shipping. The business side is bolstered, at least in theory, but a web development business with a focus on economy, but one suspects that they attract little such business, because their site is littered with gratuitous animated GIFs and misspelled words that scream, at least to me, "amateur!" OTOH, the site has a bunch of good ideas, and offers such fuzzy-headed lefty resources-- such as, besides the aforementioned bike part database-- free web sites to bicycling-oriented community organizations that one is tempted to say "what's so great about properly-spelled text if it says nothing you want to hear?" and "maybe plentitudes of animated GIFs are a matter of taste?" and lighten up a bit. On the other hand, their subtitle is "Best Cycling Site," and anybody that's been to my site knows that can't be true!

Based in Scotland, the utility of this site to shoppers here in The Great Satan isn't obvious. Besides a lot of information about what they have for sale, though, is information of local utility-- such as their recommended cycling routes in the region-- that would come in handy for the touring visitor (wish that was me). The Edinburgh Bicycle Resources section is probably that of most general interest. Check out, for example, Why Cycle?, worth a visit just for the graphics.

Encino Cyclery
Purveyors of Marin mountain and city bikes, "championship wheels by Kevin Casey," and sponsors of the Encino Cyclery Cycling Club, which is NORBA and USCF affiliated. There is also quite a bit of public service type information up on this page, including some advocacy stuff. We liked this quote from the "our approach to cycling" section of the page:
All our employees ride bicycles to work, even though in the San Fernando Valley there is no shortage of automobiles. Ever since miners pedaled safety bikes from Nome to Dawson over 1,000 miles of the frozen Yukon, bikes have been practical transportation. So we can easily manage the few miles from home to work in temperate Southern California.

Goatwheels Trials Division
What, you may ask, is "trials"? Well, I did ask, and here's what I learned:
Trials is a type of mountain biking in which competitors attempt to negotiate very technical courses with out putting a foot (or other body part!) on the ground (or tree, etc.). It is scored kind of like golf in that the lowest score wins. There are two classes of bikes: Stock bike (26" wheels....essentially a mountain bike with some alterations) and modified (only rule is that the bikes wheels not exceed 20").
These folks sell all kinds of stuff-- bikes, tools, components, and accessories-- for afficianados of this sport.

They say "our mission is to introduce everyone to the healthy and enjoyable sport of recumbent cycling and to provide recumbent buyers with exceptional service and the best possible choices in recumbent bikes and accessories." This shop in Seattle was the place you loved to hate, when I lived there ten years ago. They were a little bit too smug, but a great shop anyway. They are also the home of Rodriquez bicycles, and are or were the home of Erikson bicycles, too-- these were the R and the E, respectively-- both respected high-end frame makers. We liked the little "bike computer," which toggles between a clock and a stopwatch that tells you how much time you blew visiting the site. There are lots of links, a "chalkboard" that users can add to (no profanity has appeared yet), a local section, and a bike specs section (information served from Bike'alog).

Leather has the capacity to deform and shape that is not present in today's plastic shell saddles." That probably explains the cult following that these saddles attract.

"Webster Bicycle has been a family owned business at the same location since 1972... the oldest store in the Clear Lake area... We carry more BMX bicycles and accessories than any store in the Houston/Clear Lake area. We also carry mountain, hybrid, and road bicycles and all the accessories to make riding safe and fun." So named because they are in Webster, not because they are WWW afficianados, though they may be that, too. Sales are strictly on-site.

Wedgwood Cycle
This shop in the Wedgwood section of Seattle (and now in Ballard and Issaquah, too) was my favorite shop when I lived there (1982-7), and brief visits since haven't tarnished my recollection of a fair, friendly, complete place for all types of cyclists to go, despite a change of hands. (In fact, just the other day they helped me out with an owner's manual for my Burley trailer, free of charge. Sweet.) The page offers The Wedgwood Cycle Sunday Mountain Bike Ride Schedule, the schedule of mechanics classes, and a lot more community-oriented stuff besides just the usual commercial copy. Nice design, too.
West Hill Shop
Based in Putney, Vermont. "Bicycles, cross-country skis (including some telemark equip), and related stuff since 1971... we are a low-key, friendly source for equipment, service, advice, good places to ride and X-C ski, racing results, touring information, snow conditions (in season), and much more." Featuring such light-hearted, woodsy sections as Neil's Deals, the Virtual Clubhouse, and the "not-quite-live" Shop Cam.
Wheel and Sprocket
A chain of bike shops, based in the Milwaukee area The web-site is riddled with 'flash', hence unreadable by many of us.

Wheel Away Cycle Center
"Sixteenth largest Cannondale dealer in the United States!" Hee-hee! Campbell, CA. To their immense credit, the page is actually updated upon occasion, a rarity indeed. Check out, too, the free lunch offer!

WheelPro
UK-based wheel-builder and supplier of wheel-building kits and parts. They use Mavic rims and DT spokes, excellent choices in my view. The page-- in Microsoft colors!-- also offers a spoke calculator, which will be handy when they get the bugs out-- and an online classified ad page, CGI-based, is forthcoming. Nice work.

Wheelworks
A shop in Belmont, Massachusetts with a real nice page design. Finally, a background that doesn't detract.
Whiplock
bike lock by Whiplock. Innovative design for the riders concerned with heavy locks that take up frame space and would rather not carry a lock or let the bike out of their site.

Wildfire Designs Bicycles
"Our shop specializes in professional repairs and service. We are a great source for parts and accessories and are one of the few frame builders building the new superwide tire fatbikes. Alaskan mountain biking spoken here!" (The above is from the web site--I am just a customer that is an enthusiast for these kinds of bikes because they're great for riding in the snow--and all year round!) Ice Coast Biker.
