This is a project that has been discussed for many years.
Previously, there was the 'North Ring Corridor committee'. The
latest incarnation is the 'North Mendota Parkway'.
The original idea for a North Beltline grew out of the 1992
"Dane 2020" report. Eventually this led to the
"North Ring Corridor" study, which recommend creating
a four-lane highway from the route (East to West):
Hwy 19 -> Hwy 113 -> CTH M -> CTH K -> Hwy 12
In 1999, there was a County Board proposal to 'map' the
route. Opposition to this proposal lead to
to a compromise, which is the NMPAC.
The North Mendota Parkway Advisory Committee is charged with
making recommendations for transportation facilities to the county board.
These will be based projected land uses for the next 50 years.
At least on paper, they are doing the Right Thing: making
transportation plans based on land use plans.
The study area is roughly bounded by:
the nothern third of Lake Mendota on the south; Hwy 12
on the west; a line about 10 miles north of Waunakee on the north;
and I-90/94 on the east.

development scenarios.
September, 2003: Open House to present selected
alternative and implementation package.
A
draft report (PDF) of
the committee's recommendations was released. We are encouraged
to see extensive land use controls built into the plans.
