Active Body Holster
A holster-- yes, for firearms-- designed for joggers and cyclists. "An armed society is a polite society" is their motto. Two sizes, three gun styles, and left-handed models are available. Our favorite snippet of ad copy on the site reads "a padded flap keeps the grip out of your ribs. No more checkered love handles!" That hadn't been a problem for us, but who knows what the future might hold. Perhaps Fido will meet with a little surprise next time he sprints for shins? Or maybe Merle and Duane will learn another good reason for keeping the 4x4 a nice, safe, legal distance from your Trek. The possibilities abound. Decent links list for the like-minded at this site, too.

Answer Products
Brutally graphical page for this maker of Manitou forks (plus some other stuff) is almost text-free. Their Java applet didn't work for us so we can't really say what the sum total of the page is, but we can predict that you will wish that you had a fast link if yours is as slow as ours is.

"New Handcycle from Sweden for 2 years children and up: The ARMBIKE goes forward when you pull the handle towards you and it coasts you when you push the handle away from you. The handle can stay still whenever the Armbike is in motion. The Armbike is a good compliment for the wheelchair, because the resistece starts when you pull the handle towards you. Of course its fun to bicycle to. " The site is all in Swedish, but there are fun graphics of these innovative cycles.

Batavus
Dutch makers of bicycles of a variety of stripes, since 1904 or so. They make a model called the Madison, an obvious attempt to grab the lucrative Madison, WI market (where they have no dealers, whereas there are something like 1400 dealers in The Netherlands). Available in English. The history section is fun, and the factory tour is also worth taking. A surprisingly deep and friendly site.

Bell Helmets
Information on their helmets, and a dealer locator-- which latter is pretty slick-- since most bike shops deal in their helmets, it lets you find five or ten bikes shops close to any zip code. For my Madison zip it referred me to one in Whitewater, one in Janesville, and eight within three miles of my house.

[Added: February 11, 2002. ]
Bellwether
These folks make a wide line of cycling apparel, bragging in particular about their "seamless contoured chamois." That sounds like something I could sit on for 100 miles or so. The site offers the entire catalog, but you can't buy from the site-- instead, you can go to the dealer locator, which worked well for us. This is an exceptionally good-looking site that offers nothing beyond information on their products.

Bianchi
Famous Italian makers of celeste-colored racing bicycles, but also now in other markets as well. This site is heavily shocked, which rather leaves us Linux users in the dark, but we're getting used to that. This site offers all sorts of stuff-- an interactive tool for selecting a bicycle, for example-- but what grabbed us the most was an online book that gives the history of the company and its founder, Edoardo Bianchi. According to the book, he invented the modern bicycle-- the "safety"-- in 1885, and also was the first to put pneumatic tires on a bike, the first to build a woman's bicycle, and the company was the first to build what was effectively a mountain bike, for military purposes. The company also built motorcycles and automobiles for awhile. Check it out.
For somewhat more locally relevant info, check out Bianchi, USA.

B.O.B. Trailers
San Luis Obispo CA based manufacturer of bicycle trailers, happily online at last, with such nuggets abounding as "B.O.B's mission in life: 'Pave the world with bicycles.'" We'd come to think of them as a maker of cargo trailers, but they've now entered the fray with a child trailer as well-- with an innovative attachment system. There is a list of their distributors by country, a "personals" section, news, specs, and so forth. We like it, even if they did design it as if everybody has a T3 line...
[Added December 15, 1996.]
Bontrager Cycles
Santa Cruz based makers of high-end road and mountain bikes, including titanium models. Even if you don't care to buy their stuff, though, there is a section called The Professor's Brain that is chock full of good technical information, well-written, that makes the visit more than worthwhile. 'Course, if you do care to buy their stuff, all the requisite information on their product line is right here... also well-written.

Hosted at EarthPledge, which gives it a sort of green legitimacy.

[Added July 6, 1998.]
Burley Design Cooperative
Eugene-based makers of bike trailers, tandems, raingear, and an Adams Trailabike knockoff (but that connects to a custom rack instead of to the seatpost). They brag that they have a ratio of highest-paid to lowest-paid employee of 1:1, which, if true, is an amazing fact-- I recently read that the national average is now 160:1. Their trailers are pervasive-- the d'Lite is reportedly the largest-selling folding bike trailer-- and solid. The page has a section for each product line, with basic information and specs for each product.

Campagnolo
This long-awaited page for Campagnolo, inventor of such bicycle engineering basics as the quick-release and derailleur and maker of high-end bicycle components, comes in English and Italian flavors. The best pages for pioneering European manufacturers have really interesting history sections, and this one is no exception. Page design is top-notch (though I'd personally prefer to give over less of my screen real estate to the static frame with the animated logo). I'd like to say more about this page, but something went belly up in the course of my review, so you'll need to belly up to the page and check it out yourself.
[Added August 30, 1998.]
Cannondale Corporation
These fat tube folk have a promising design for a pretty comprehensive page that is only partially functional at this writing (19 June 1995).

Caribike
This site promotes a line of folding bicycles-- a tandem, an urban bike, a mountain bike-- sold directly from the site, and apparently made by Redlof. The products are well thought of by people who know folding bikes. They occasionally hold a contest for a free bike. Also apparently a project of theirs is BicycleWeb, a really big hierarchical links list with Caribike behind all the ad banners.

Charger Electric Bicycles
For about $1500, an electric bike with lead-acid batteries. The basic principle is that of assisted riding: if you don't pedal, it doesn't apply any power. Above 20MPH, it also doesn't assist you. You can set the amount of assist across a wide range of 1:1 to 4:1. At 1:1-- which means it does half the work-- it will take you about 20 miles at 18MPH, after which it needs another four-hour charge cycle. A joint venture with GT Bicycles.
[Added January 10, 1998.]
Chariot Carriers
"The ultimate child transport system." They also list, as one of their guiding principles, "God is... our CEO." Reportedly, their trailers fold quickly, and are convertable to strollers.
[Added February 15, 1998.]
Checkwater Hands-free Drinking Systems
I'm only faintly aware of the concept of the "hydration system," but I think I can state with authority that these folks seem to have a new approach that market which doesn't involve the more typical bladders. Instead, they sell mix-and-match components that can be combined with standard water bottles to make inexpensive hydration systems with a variety of mounts and so forth. Luddite that I am, I found the models to be the most interesting part of the site, but others might lust after, say, the bite valves.

Cycling mirrors of two designs-- helmet-mounted, and sunglasses-mounted-- with (insecure) online ordering. I happen to use the helmet-mounted flavor myself, because it seems to last longer than the Third-Eye ones (by virtue of a flexible arm instead of a rigid one), but it isn't perfect either: the little ball joint gets sloppy after about a year.

Cycle-by-Cycle Carriers
They make a couple of flavors of bicycle racks for motorcycles in Bend, Oregon.
[Added November 12, 1998.]

Makers-- and sellers-- of titanium cogsets and granny gears. Why would you want a titanium cogset?, you ask, if you are like me. They motivate the answer to that question with the information that "for example, a [steel] 14-32 seven speed HG70 weighs 410 grams versus 220 g. in titanium..." and "only frequent shoppers buy aluminum alloy grannies." They ain't cheap, but they offer a 25% discount if you mention that you found them on the web. Based in Burnaby BC.

These folks, based in Eugene, make three products that are represented on this page: the LimeLight blinking light strip, which has an integral velcro strap (for less than $10), a compact tool kit for cyclists with an integral light, and a combo bicycle child carrier/back rack/cargo holder. This last is promoted as an alternative to plastic child seats, and, indeed, it does offer some advantages, not least of which is that it can carry a 55 pound kid (or a bag of groceries). The editor saw this one at the Seattle Bike Expo, and it's a neat idea.

The site offers information on the bikes, new, and a password-protected "community" section that only owners of the bikes can access. I'd like to stab the guy who designed this site, which has a very lovely heading that weighs in at a less-lovely 106KB. They make racks and fenders, which they could have told us in about 106 bytes, but instead make us visit each product page to discover. Nor did they scrimp on the marketting goo up front, which is, as typical, content-free. On the other hand, the products look good, so this may simply be a matter of a company best experienced at LBS instead of WWW. Better that than the other way around, eh?

Maxxis Tires
Makers of a variety of types of tires-- including, obviously, for bicycles-- based in Suwanee Georgia. They claim that "odds are we made the tires you are riding now," which, if true, leads me to recommend that you not ride your bike and surf the web simultaneously! As far as I can make out, all the tires they make under the Maxxis brand are for off-road and BMX applications. The page has great cartoony images that remind us of Big Daddy Roth's hot rod work.
[Added August 30, 1998.]
Merlin Metalworks
[Merlin logo]
Makers, in Cambridge Massachusetts, of handbuilt titanium bicycle frames. This is a big site, with more technical information available than most bother with. For example, there is a giant article on titanium-- history, economics, metallurgy, and so forth-- with a glossary of terms at the end. That strokes the engineer in us-- we figure that a company that doesn't talk down to us, and that wants us to know the details of the expensive stuff they would have us buy, might just be working with a measure of integrity in their mix. Or they might just be clueless engineers that haven't figured out that animated GIFs sell more bikes per bike than does well-written technical copy.

Michelin - Bicycle Tires
Michelin started out as a bicycle tire company, long before automobiles were widespread. They are still at it, though I suspect that this part of the business is in the single percentage digits. Lately they've been pushing a line of bright green off-road tires that are impregnated with silica, which reportedly allows the use of a softer rubber without loss of durability. Read about their entire line here. I like to read about the history of old European bicycle businesses like Michelin; here is the history of Michelin on their web.

Makers of high-performance (whatever that means) folding bicycles. Since 1996, they've been partnered with BMW, who markets, exclusively, a 21-speed folding mountain bike internationally. Four models include a tandem, which you know to be a nice choice if you've ever tried to move a tandem under other than its own power. They deal with a shortage of dealers by offering to ship you one of their bikes for 30 days risk-free, which implies they have some confidence in their products. As cheap as $500, as much as $2500 (for the tandem, of course).

Panaracer
Decent page for this maker, for more than 40 years, of all kinds of bicycle tires. They have specs on each of their offerings-- which include a rim and a variety of accessories (such as an adhesive-backed Kevlar strip for puncture proofing tires) and a "technical" section that gives some background on their designs. What I missed was any hint of who they are or where they are located.

Park Tool
[Park Tool logo]
"Park Tool has been manufacturing bicycle specific tools since 1963 and is currently the world's largest bicycle tool manufacturer." They don't sell their stuff from the site-- except for tee-shirts, hats, and the like (a decent shop apron for only $12.50 caught my eye)-- but their entire catalog, in a useful form, is there, plus some other handy stuff for the end user-- such as suggested tool lists for different levels of do-it-yourselfness.

Pearl Izumi Technical Wear
I remember these folks as the makers of perhaps the best pair of gloves I've ever owned. (All too soon, though, I was the owner of a single glove which vanity would not permit me to wear without its partner. Drat!) Besides a slick design to their page, there is also some useful advice there-- I was attracted to the "One Less Car" section, which had nice tips on winter cycling-- tips that went beyond a menu of which of their products were the solution to cold-weather woes. They also say, to their credit:
Pearl Izumi and the Bicycle Federation of America have co-published the "One Less Car" Advocacy Kit. The free, 20-page guide gives advice on how to get involved and make your community more rider-friendly. To get a copy, call the Pearl Izumi consumer department at (800)877-7080 or send a request to: Consumer Services, 2300 Central Avenue, Suite G, Boulder, Colorado 80301.
After reading that, I just might replace them gloves.

Respro
With air pollution increasing in the wake of relaxed air quality standards and a dramatic increase in driving over the last decade, is it any wonder that a company has found a market for pollution-filtering masks targetted at cyclists? This UK-based company has put up a really nice-looking page that summarizes their offerings, including technical information. They would seem to really work-- besides filtering out particulates down to a fraction of a micron, they also pick up such fun organics as benzene. And, they make a good case that the masks seal well enough to be effective. All in all, a nice product line that we wish there wasn't a market for. BTW, here is an article the editor (that is, me) wrote that might help motivate the need for these things.
