Miscellaneous Global Sites

[Spoke graphic]
In one sense, the existence of this section is evidence of our failure to design a hierarchy that finds a place for each flavor of site, but in another sense it's a testimonial to the originality of the folks who designed these things, which just aren't me-too enough to fit into one of our other bulging boxes of sites.

They claim to be "the first national library of local bicycle cue/route sheets." A great idea, although the cue sheets are only 'free' if they are sponsored.

"Cue sheets from all over the country. Members can earn points for submitting rides and redeem the points for free stuff! Also have bike club news and info, your bike log, and much more!"
You are required to register as a member in order to take advantage of these cool features, and to install 'Flash Player' to tour the web site. I didn't make the effort.

Campagnolo Only!
"The only site on the WWW devoted to extolling the many virtues of the world's finest bicycling components." Tens of reasons why Campagnolo is better, plus testimonials, tech info, links to related sites, and lovely photos of some of the best Campy stuff. Unique!

CARveat Emptor
"An Arts & Sciences Crash Ph.D. Course in CarBuyology 101"
What's an automobile-oriented site doing in a list of bicycling sites? This site is to biking sites as a mad-cow disease site is to vegetarian sites: puts the fear of God into you with respect to the alternatives. This giant site is devoted to exposing the fraud and deceit that is rampant in the automobile industry. The claim, which we have fun beleiving, is that "fraudulent sales and service practices in the automobile industry alone last year cost America's friends and families $22,000,000,000..." My favorite section is Alternatives to the Common Car, where he suggests "consider getting a bicycle instead of buying a car..." He says "we knew we were on the right road in highlighting the shortcomings of the automobile industry when someone left a message on the answering machine, suggesting we were responsible for the economic and social problems in America..." We'd like to get some messages like that, and we fear that their absence means that we're not doing our job very well.

C.H.U.N.K. 666.
"Chunk six-six-six is a bicycle gang and temperance league which believes in the use of muscle-powered steeds to augment the physiology of their riders. Mechanically-powered vehicles tend to induce boredom in the people who are steering them; humans then counter this boredom by driving drunk or removing their mufflers so that they can annoy people. So easy to do! So weak and spineless! Chunk nullifies this effect by crafting bicycles which induce a state of intoxication in their riders."

Club Tread Report
This is a monthly newsletter, available via email or on the web that is sponsored by Brauns Online, a shop and mail-order outfit in Kitchener, Ontario. The content is "cycling industry news, product reviews, and tech tips." It's probably easier to read on the web, but subscribing is the way to get the information in a timely fashion. It's free in either event.
CyberCycle
"CyberCycle was designed by high school students for the ThinkQuest international Web Site Contest. Our goal is to be the most informative cycling site on the 'net and we feel that we've done just that by providing the cyclist with everything they need to know about: nutrition, mountain biking, training, equipment, an extensive (step-by-step) section on repairs, a special section just for women cyclists, forums, interactive polls, and much more!" Really good-looking. Includes a section called CyberCycle: The Game that's a nice diversion.

cycling.org
"The Global Cycling Network is an electronic information desk for cyclists." Formerly run by a volunteer and called VeloNet, it has been resited at and, more recently, integrated into, Cyber Cyclery, a commercial site. (Background on the events that lead to the move and the events that have followed are here). Hundreds of cycling-oriented mailing lists are run at this site, and there are also big lists of organizations, plus tens of small web pages for organizations without the will or means to site their own.

Cycling Accident Database
moved to our Safety section.
Home of the unique and famous bicycle accident archive, which features a facility for entering the details of your own bicycle accident, with the possibility of being selected as Chris' Pick of the Week. Now, you or I might prefer to avoid even thinking about our little mishaps, nor care to hear the details of those of net-strangers, but for those of us who live for such stuff: this is your page. Newly resited and reglitzed.

Hideouswhitenoise [HWN logo]
this link is now in Bike Messenger section.
This is an online 'zine published by bike messengers in Toronto, but with broad appeal-- at least to bike messengers elsewhere, and probably to anybody with a bicycle transportation advocacy jones. According to Guido BruidoClarke, who has a hand in it, "Hideousewhitenoise is a e-zine that promotes cycling, reports on urban bike racing and is fighting against the world domination of the automobile." We enjoyed the report on the 4th Annual Cycle Messenger World Championship, held this year in San Francisco. Did you know that 3500 cyclists participated in a Critical Mass ride there?

National Bicycle History Archive
"The Archive contains over 30,000 original catalogs, photos and advertisements ranging from the 1860s thru 1960s. Hundreds of books ranging from one of the first English language bicycle books in the 1860s to more modern works... we can assist private collectors with information and advice on history and restorations. We are available with movies, videos, slide shows, speaking engagements, and have access to the curator's collection of over 1,000 bicycles." Featuring perhaps the world's most hideous logo. Not that much is on the site at this writing, but they plan to add many photographs in the near future.

National Motorists Association
These folks say "Did you get a traffic ticket? We can help." They advocate such agendas as speed limits that match design standards of roads, legalized radar detectors, an end to photo radar, and decommissioning of speed traps. Their agents like to cruise the bicycling groups giving the lie to such outdated notions as the idea that the speed of automobile traffic in residential areas might be set to consider such factors as the presence of children or other non-motorists in the area. That might be less than the design limit! A good site for getting your blood boiling in preparation for, say, a visit to a meeting of your local transportation commission.
