Isthmus Bike Path Resolution

Passed by the Madison Common Council, Sep. 24, 2001

Whereas the Isthmus Bike Path is a critical and popular transportation corridor for bicyclists and pedestrians; and,

Whereas during the spring and summer of 2001, a series of assaults upon bike path users threatened to discourage neighbors from using the path, especially at night; and,

Whereas residents of the Schenk-Atwood and Starkweather neighborhoods were determined to protect the safety of Isthmus Bike Path users; and,Ê

Whereas residents of the Schenk-Atwood and Starkweather neighborhoods organized a bike path patrol in which 55 volunteers took evening shifts patrolling the path between St. Paul Avenue and Dempsey Street; and,

Whereas this volunteer effort required bravery and commitment; and,

Whereas patrol participants were trained in personal safety measures by members of the Madison Police Department; and,

Whereas the cooperative efforts of volunteers and Madison police officers kept the area under patrol incident-free and under continuous use by pedestrians and bicyclists;

Now Therefore Be It Resolved that the Madison Common Council commend the community spirit, perseverance, and courage ofÊ Isthmus Bike Path Patrol volunteers; and,

Be It Finally Resolved that special thanks be extended to Alexandra Aulisi who organized the patrol, to the Harmony Bar which acted as patrol headquarters, and to the Madison Police Department, which supported the neighborhood effort and ultimately apprehended and arrested the assailants.
