A group of citizen bicycle racers in the greater Madison area, sponsoring
the Blue Mounds Classic and weekly training
rides and social events. Their motto is "Bicycle racers with normal lives,"
but a normal life is not really a requirement. Most of the rides they
participate in are in the WISport Series.
It costs $25 to join, which gets you the newsletter, discounts on bike
stuff at sponsoring shop Atkins Bicycle Shoppe
in Verona, and so forth.
If you are interested in joining the Atkins Citizen Racing Club, contact Dan Atkins at the Atkins Bicycle Shoppe, 517 Half Mile Road, Verona, WI. (608) 845-6644 or the team membership director at members@atkinscrc.com.

The Bicycle Coalition is a loose collection of representatives from various groups, shops, and clubs that puts up a table each week at the Dane County Farmers' Market, which runs from late April through early November each year. The table is staffed by volunteers from the represented groups on a rotating basis, who are there to answer questions and hand out the copious literature that is at the table-- all of which is free. Contact the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin to participate |

This is the big touring club in town, active since 1974 and boasting 350 members, and even more participants, given that the ride schedule is widely available in local bike shops-- such as Williamson Street and Yellow Jersey, both of which help fund it-- and that membership is not a prerequisite to participation in the rides-- except for special events.
There are three or four rides a week in the heart of the season: a Tuesday evening ride, a Thursday evening ride, usually a Saturday "leisure" ride, and a big three-distance-option Sunday morning ride. Most rides start in town. There are two annual meetings, and a five-times annually newsletter, Extra Ordinary Reflections.
Pick up a bright yellow membership form and schedule at Yellow Jersey. Or just send $15 to:

"Founded in 1964, the Capital Community Citizens is the only organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing the quality of life in our Dane County Commuity... dedicated to helping our community protect our environment and community in the face of rapid population growth." These are the folks who sponsor the famed Orchids and Onions awards each year, and who cosponsored the Nolen in the '90s conference in June 1995 that brought such notable urban designers as Andres Duany to town to focus on our land use problems.

I beleive that successful resolution of our land use issues during this period of extreme growth is crucial to the preservation of Dane County as a decent place to ride a bicycle.

Okay, so it's a stretch to claim the CBE has anything more to do with bicycling than a kind of warm, fuzzy affinity to bicycling advocacy. CBE is an environmental advocacy group with offices in various Midwestern states, including a quite active one in Milwaukee. They are also a sponsor of the NTA. They can be reached at 608-251-2804.

This is the chapter of WORBA that serves the Dane County area, carefully named not to exclude members that aren't precisely in Dane County. Planned activities include fun planned rides, building/upkeeping trails at CamRock County Park, Blue Mounds State Park and other local sites, and year-round meetings, both social and business.
I'll probably get this all wrong, but my understanding of this group is that it manages an endowment that is used to fund small grants to bicycling-related projects in Dane County. Examples of projects funded in previous years are the 1994 BTA Bike To Work Day and John Stockham's book of recreational rides in Dane County. Here's the part that I'm particularly shaky on: the endowment was created when Yellow Jersey went from being a co-op to a private business some years ago. I'd love to hear corrections to or verification of my version of this story.

"The Nine Springs Network is a group of individuals and organizations whose purpose is to insure that the Nine Springs E-Way is recognized as a valuable natural and environmental asset to all the governmental units along its boundary and to the citizens of Dane County. The Network works toward raising awareness of all people and, especially, governmental officials on the environmental and recreational significance of the E-Way through advocacy and education. The result of these efforts will ensure that elected and appointed decision-makers learn of the environmental impact of potential development along the E-Way corridor so that they will make informed decisions to preserve and protect this irreplaceable resource."

This political group has established The Fair Share Transportation Initiatives as one of their agenda items, which are supported by such other organizations as the Bicycle Transportation Alliance of Dane County (of which this Bicycling Community Page is a project), the New Transportation Alliance, the Teamsters Local 695, and Wisconsin's Environmental Decade. Here's what they have to say for themselves:
Progressive Dane seeks to ally progressive voters and activists and community organizations to form a powerful, unified and independent force in electoral politics and non=electoral struggles. Our strategies are simple. Recruit and support candidates responsive to our communities' needs and committed to progressive change. Build a democratically-run, grassroots political organization to assure our elected officials will be accountable to the people who voted for them.
Our goal is to develop a vibrant, progressive alternative to the Democrats and Republicans."

"Better red than driving!" is the motto of this "share-a-bike" program, which has distributed bright red-painted bicycles liberally throughout particularly busy pedestrian areas in Madison (for example, State Street). The bikes belong to the community and are there for anybody who can use them at the moment. They are maintained by at-risk youth, who are paid a salary and trained for their efforts. (For similar programs , see the listings at IBike. )
Now with their own web page!

This is an informal group of riders that meet in a variety of mostly rural locations after work on Wednesday nights between April and November. They've been doing it for as long as anybody can remember. Printed cue sheets are provided at each ride, and an annual schedule is printed and distributed each Spring. Believe it or not, this Bicycling Community Page was started for the purpose of putting the schedule of rides online, after which the scope rather widened. For more information, contact Jim Henkel at 273-1344.
"Wheels for Winners is a non-profit organization designed to provide at-risk and underprivileged youth the opportunity to earn bicycles while becoming responsible and active members of their communities.
Childhood isn't the same without a bicycle. Wheels for Winners is designed to provide a bike to any needy child willing ot earn it. Each child is able to earn a bicycle through task-oriented activities tailored to individual capabilities and needs."
This service organization needs help collecting, repairing, and storing bicycles, seeks donations of bicycles and money, and needs volunteers to work with the kids, too.
