The interior of a coaxial cable is arranged in a concentric layer from the center to the outside. The inner conductor, usually a copper-clad steel located in the center inside the cable, is enclosed by an insulating layer or a dielectric material, followed by a series of shields, typically aluminum, and lastly by an outside insulating jacket. The shielded design of the cable permits the copper core to transfer data rapidly without any disturbance. Apart from that, environmental factors like bad weather, electrical noise and electromagnetic interferences are prevented from corrupting and destroying the signal.

Carries Radio-Frequency (RF) Energy

Coaxial cables are efficient in transferring radio-frequency energy. Thus, it is categorized (in the classification of cabling) as a “Radio Frequency (RF) Transmission Line”. Owing to the physical uniformity of the cable and further, by the arrangement and dimensions of the conductors, this gives the coaxial cables the capability to transport radio frequency energy rather than diffuse high-frequency signals. However, once the physical structure of the coaxial cable is disturbed, this results in the impairment of the medium in transmitting radio frequency.

While fiber optic cables can carry more additional data than coaxial cables, the cost of which is more expensive compared to the latter. Coaxial cables are convenient, given that installing the cables is fast and easy. Coaxial cables are most appropriate in residences and in small and medium-sized business establishments such as those that require an average-capacity of the data transmission network.
