The technology behind these online video calls is the Voiceover Internet Protocol or VoIP in short. It is considered as one of the most popular standard technology when applications utilize online voice and video calling in their respective programs. The VoIP was the modern technology that people discovered in the 1990s.
What Is VoIP?
In order to learn about the further workings of VoIP, we need to learn first about the IP part. IP or Internet Protocol refers to how all computers are linked through the internet. The create a connection, the computers must have a similar system of working and that is the IP. You must have heard of the term IP address before. Just like how each establishment has an address or each telephone has a number, each computer with internet access has an IP address too. VoIP systems utilize two known international standards or protocols in order to set up a communication route between two or more IP addresses. These two protocols are known as H.323 and SIP or Session Initiation protocols.
How Does VoIP Work?
The VoIP works in two ways: call signaling and data transmission.
Traditional telephone call signaling differs from the VoIP signaling in a sense that VoIP signaling is much more similar to cellphone telephony where the respective numbers are not permanently linked to a location. The first part of a VoIP call would involve your computer locating the internet receiver of your recipient. After that, two or more computers or devices would exchange data and messages.
Much like storing an Mp3 file on the computer, when you utilize VoIP calls, your voices are turned into digital numeric forms in order to be transmitted. When we view or listen to these calls, the digital numbers are again turned into analog forms. The program responsible for this transmission is called the CODEC (Coder-Decoder). These CODECs work with VoIP by transmitting the frequency of human voices or the Hertz. Because of modern technology, these CODECs can now transmit video and voice data as well.
But how do real-time calls occur? RTP or Real-Time Protocol is how the VoIP sends data online. It’s the same protocol used when we stream live videos or download these said videos through the web.
